Don't Knife Me?

Need to go diving?! Need to go diving in Kingston?!
There is evil mono-filament fishing line lurking in the depths awaiting unsuspecting novice, crappy American and Australian divers to get tangled up in (hear the fish snicker, "tehehe").

Your best bet is to dive with a knife or shears/scissors attached to you in a safe and accessible way. In my few years as an online scuba diver I came across this site here:

http://home.earthlink.net/~toddclagett/NovaTech/knifesheath.htm

Which gives some very easy instructions on constructing your own dive knife and sheath. This is a good deal!

The instructions suggest you to spend ~$6.50 to get a cobbler to sew it up...please don't. You can do it yourself using a pair of pliers and dental floss in an hour (or a stitching awl).

I made my own two sheaths using a "non fraying" type of dental floss (mint flavoured of course!) with a backstitch pattern.

Here they are:
1. This one can be attached to a BC, harness or weight belt:
I haven't yet tried this yet but I think I will need to sew a velcro strap in the loop to secure the knife handle like this.

2. This one is a slight modification of the above and can be attached to a thigh, calf or arm using two velcro utility straps. I stitched the nylon so as to create an extra loop at the sheath tip. Look at the photos, this is hard to explain:

I have used the second sheath while snorkeling in the last week and it is really comfortable.

Fun stuff.

I suggest you use fishing line instead of dental floss, if you have it. Not only is fishing line much stronger if you get the right stuff, it just seems a little more appropriate, doesn't it?

I am sure you could use fishing line. I have never tried it so I am not sure.

I have no idea which is stronger as it depends on what type of floss and fishing line you use (I can't find material data on floss)!! But floss as compared to normal thread appears to have a higher tensile strength. You don't really need lots of strength just something that won't rot and is easy to work with.

Try fishing line before you suggest! Use whatever you have.

I have tried fishing line. My blue bag is held together by it, and that holds me up. Oy.
